When I did open a boutique I guess you could say I got more than I bargained for!

it was after much preparation,that In 1991, I was ready to open my own boutique called "Laurie Weir" in Tarzana, California. I want to say two things here. Opening a boutique was the single most wonderful thing I have ever done for myself.

However, I also want to add that even with all my retail experience, a business degree and a terrific mentor at my side, the first year or so was still filled with many challenging issues.

What I really mean is that all the due diligence in the world did not "100%" prepare me for what was about to come my way. I am speaking of all the emotions that you feel when you open a boutique and how to deal with them.

I am talking about what to do when employees do not show up for work or worse yet, when they steal.

 I am talking about knowing what to do when the phone rings 50+ times daily with vendor solicitations that take you away from your clients and the ability to make sales.

 I am talking about knowing exactly what forms of advertising to use that are affordable and effective and drive customers into the store.

 I am talking about knowing what computer and anti theft systems to use right from the get-go to track customers and inventory, and to save time while keeping goods safe from shoplifters.

Let’s face it, when you open a clothing store, you need time to concentrate on more important things like driving sales and making your boutique beautiful. Yet, no one explained any of this to me before my store opened.

I had my business plan >>> and I knew what my sales should be and how much inventory to buy and so on. What I didn't know were all of the “realities” that come when opening a boutique business. But I learned them quickly - I had to.

Once I opened, I was slammed by them. I spent my first year in business being overwhelmed and playing catch-up. It was a difficult and wonderful time - all at the same time. And the worst part was that I made many costly mistakes along the way.
